Mind 2 Matter hard at work. Assembly has begun for Piggy Boy!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07373009722025876189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2171424743422452867.post-38468614307260373432014-03-09T01:02:00.000-08:002014-03-09T01:02:23.493-08:00Adjustments... Are needed. It's been a really busy six weeks.<br />
<br />
I'm taking 19 units, trying to be as much help as possible at Mind-2-Matter and manage to actually eat good food (and make sure my husband eats good food too).<br />
<br />
I'm at "school" like 30 hours a week. Which is sheer torture to me. I'm not a classroom person. I was home schooled. I have been taking "distance learning" classes since they involved watching a class on cable access TV. Online classes were a dream come true for me. This is the most time I've spent "at school" in a week probably since I was in the 4th grade. It's torturous.<br />
<br />
I also have to adjust to different standards since transferring from AAU to SFSU. Even at 19 units, I still feel like I have "free" time (which is totally an illusion as I'm trying to do a million different things at the same time). At AAU, if you tried to take more than 12, you were likely to suffer a nervous breakdown. I worked full time and took 6 units for a couple of years while there and that was close to overload too.<br />
<br />
I have noticed that concept is more important than execution at SFSU. I have also found that people don't really take deadlines seriously. I have one class that I think we are about 2 weeks behind in because that was how long it took for everyone to turn the first assignment in. I had it done on time. No excuses. I've never seen instructors move due dates before. It has always been turn it in (even unfinished) or get no credit or a drastically reduced grade for being late.<br />
<br />
Another adjustment for me is the idea that everyone must avoid having feelings hurt at all costs. (I had a teacher bring cookies to lessen the blow of crits) Some how everyone is supposed to feel good about themselves at all times AND feel like they are important no matter what. WTF? I had a group project that no one was cooperating on. I took the lead and tried to manage it (some how it's too difficult to use an online learning interface, but these people are online 24/7 for other things). Like herding cats. I sent an email because the project deadline was looming rapidly indicating that people needed to step up and contribute. I also reminded them that we were to submit a list of the group and each individual's role within it. Apparently this was hostile, aggressive and bordering on violent language. It possibly could have been deemed bullying (seriously? bullying? we're in college people).<br />
<br />
Apparently showing up to class on time is totally optional as well. I have one class that starts at 5:10 and ends at 7:55. There are a couple of students that don't show up until 7 p.m. The instructor doesn't take roll but I don't have the balls to try that. It would be my luck that he would try taking role if I tried to show up late.<br />
<br />
Let's just say that after 4 years of no nonsense, school is to be treated with utmost professionalism and no spared feelings, this touchy feely crap is hard to take.<br />
<br />
The good news is I can be out in 2 semesters provided they actually have the classes I need available. But state schools are a bargain. It's basically a flat rate for anything over 6.1 units. After breaking down my tuition and fees with the number of units I'm taking, the per unit cost is about $70 a unit. Almost as cheap as community college!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07373009722025876189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2171424743422452867.post-20771809217441480162014-03-08T14:04:00.000-08:002014-03-08T14:04:59.876-08:00Working with Chance - Shifted Perspective After thinking about what we have been discussing indeterminacy and working in chance in my conceptual strategies class, I decided to apply it to my independent studies class as well.<br />
<br />
In 3D printing, a lot of variables are left to chance. There is no guarantee that your print will be successful. If you print the same object 1,000 times, there are any number of things that will effect the outcome. Ambient temperature, material, hot end temperatures, computer issues, hardware issues, and more can change the outcome of your print.<br />
<br />
Case in point:<br />
<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
This is an 18 gallon tote filled with failed prints (going back about a year - there are more that have been thrown away or are in other boxes as well). Some failed due to equipment failure. Some failed due to material failure. Some of them we have no clue as to why they failed. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
This box is intended to be run through a "<a href="http://makezine.com/projects/guide-to-3d-printing-2014/diy-filament-extruder/" target="_blank">filabot</a>" style machine to reclaim the expended filament. Mind-2-Matter and LaserGnomes try to be as green as possible, so reclaiming spent filament is inline with our business plans. I figured in the meantime, I could do a bit of reclamation myself. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I spent some time digging through the box to create a sculpture from failed and discarded prints. Since we design and print a myriad of things from engineering parts to organic shapes, it was an interesting melange of components to choose from. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
We had a number of MegaFire and SlugFire shells that failed for various reasons or were made prior to additional revisions that lead to our finished retail ready products for NERF blasters. We also had a number of failed flowers from another project that we undertook for Valentines Day. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Obviously it's time to get a larger photo tent :)</div>

We had toys. I don't remember EVERYTHING being pink, purple or turquoise for girls and primary colors for boys. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It's really interesting to see the Lego then and now ad that was written about on <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/02/12/then-and-now-lego-ad_n_4768560.html" target="_blank">Huff Post </a>recently. Looking at the 1981 image, that's how I remember childhood. I don't remember everything being pink, princess themed or looking like a bag of glitter threw up all over it. </div>
<div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I don't remember being told that anything was out of my reach or that certain things were for "boys" or "girls". Maybe this wasn't normal. But it seemed awfully normal to me. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But then again, I remember being far more engaged in creative play than having toys when I was young. Maybe there were some advantages to not having a lot of money. </div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I remember playing "mad scientist" and writing notes about my potions (typically made from plants and dirt in the yard). I imagined charting data (I was pretty convinced my nail hardening potion that was made from ash and several other things totally worked). </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I remember making plant based dyes using crushed plants (my favorite was crushing purple flowers and trying to draw with the "ink" I had made. I tried to weave baskets from pine needles. I built a loom in my tree house and spent hours weaving yarn. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I helped my dad pull engines from our cars. I had a 6' long poster of a Lamborghini on my wall for years. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Sure, I had my Barbies, My Little Pony, Strawberry Shortcake and Cabbage Patch Kids. But I don't remember having much in the way of pink (Barbie's Corvette was sort of the exception). And Barbie would hang out with GI Joe and fought a lot of battles. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I learned how to use tools. I learned how to work on a car. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
None of this was ever presented to me as anything other than normal. Now we have groups devoted to trying to convince girls that it's cool to build things or like science. It just seemed normal, at least in my life, to build things, make things and experiment. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Perhaps my family was more progressive than we knew. But my parents and grandfather always encouraged me to try everything that interested me. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Having that encouragement has given me some amazing life experiences. And I'll be honest, when I got older, I did experience some of the "but girls don't do that" mentality. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
When I became a firefighter, my mom and grandpa supported me, but other people would ask why a pretty girl would want to do that. I was ready to join the Army. Again, a lot of why would a pretty girl want to do that. I don't think I realized that was a prevailing viewpoint until I was 18!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Kids react in the way the adults around them. When the women around them defer to men to do "man" things, it sets that up as the norm. When the men around them feed into that idea as well, it makes it seem to be normal to have a division of male/female roles. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Just do things. Don't classify things as feminine vs. masculine. When you are a child, anything is possible until the outside world tells you otherwise. Perhaps it's time to take a note from Nike and "just do it".</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>

<br />
Currently we are casting brass and pewter with little to no problems. We've also tackled bronze as well!<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Brass <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimal_surface" target="_blank">Minimal Surface Cube</a></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Bronze "Lazard" by Justin Kelly</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Brass, bronze and gold tone finishes are all the rage in decorating right now (in moderation I can understand, but it sort of reminds me of the Golden Girls and the 1980's horrid bathroom fixtures when overdone). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The resurgence in popularity apparently has been building since early 2013. I know that when a former employer would offer vintage brass pieces, they'd sell out almost instantly, but I didn't realize how far reaching it was. <a href="http://www.housebeautiful.com/decorating/ideas/home-decorating-trends-2013-1212#slide-4" target="_blank">House Beautiful</a> called it out in December 2012, Apartment Therapy was singing its praises in 2013 and it seems like the love of brass is still going strong, especially at <a href="http://www.newhousenewhomenewlife.com/2014/01/trending-now-in-home-decor-goldbrass.html" target="_blank">New House New Home</a>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There is certainly a nostalgic bent about brass and bronze. Brass always makes me think of my grandpa. One of his favorite pastimes before his hands got too bad was going to the thrift store and restoring brass pieces. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Brass Minimal Surface Cube (above) is an awesome example of what <a href="http://www.mind-2-matter.com/" target="_blank">Mind-2-Matter</a> can do. This form is based on theoretical mathematical principles that would be near impossible to bring to reality without 3D printing. Using traditional milling methods, it would be impossible to generate this object in brass, bronze or any other metal. We've developed a technique that has made it a reality. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Bronze "Lazard" is another example of bringing digital assets to life. It was originally created as a model for a class Justin took and it's been brought to life using 3D printing. We've then used our process to cast in bronze. This is an amazing took for digital modelers who may want to create a physical object from their digital assets!. </div>

School started on Monday and I have classes Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.<br />
<br />
I have discovered a perk of NOT attending a private school: flat rate tuition. I am taking 18 units (well, 15 until my independent studies section is approved) for the price of 6.1-12 units.<br />
<br />
Say what? <br />
<br />
At AAU, the same number of units would run about $14k.<br />
<br />
I have also crashed my first class, ever. In all my years of college, I've never had such restrictive enrollment. Typically I just enroll like the first day enrollment opens (community college and AAU worked this way). This time around it was tiered enrollment. I could enroll in up to 7 units at orientation, then I had to wait a month to enroll in up to 15. Then a week after that I could enroll in up to 19.<br />
<br />
Unfortunately, every single class I wanted was full by the time my enrollment time for the second round came up. I had just checked class enrollment levels half an hour prior to my enrollment time. I logged in at 1 minute to 5 and by the time I entered the class numbers, all of my classes were full.<br />
<br />
Eventually I got enrolled in some classes. Some that I really didn't want but I had the units. One of the classes had an instructor that was half an hour late, swayed back and forth and had voice modulation issues. I had a severe case of motion sickness by the end of class. Here's a sample of what I sat through.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5rgD0wGJ_uN3nE8EoHs-27GrxU6bG6UXU4R5lSTU3xXhWNzcdcscob9mXd4ItLdGfka3dyycXDUNQpdO0_P0kNV2kQ8h3kyr0-6AyCtfFWu_ZXSvkgcntcI8Crv3L_RqqBQx5kPd_iDud/s1600/20140128_180326.mp4" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5rgD0wGJ_uN3nE8EoHs-27GrxU6bG6UXU4R5lSTU3xXhWNzcdcscob9mXd4ItLdGfka3dyycXDUNQpdO0_P0kNV2kQ8h3kyr0-6AyCtfFWu_ZXSvkgcntcI8Crv3L_RqqBQx5kPd_iDud/s1600/20140128_180326.mp4" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The next night I saw that there were 5 seats open in the Gerontology class I really wanted. I made the bold choice to try to crash that class even though I had another class at the same time. Well, apparently everyone else had the same idea. There were 65 seats in the class. The instructor had already given 8 add codes out and was capping enrollment at 75 students. A total of 90 people showed up. I was totally making myself sick with trying to decide to sit it out and see what happened (hoping a bunch of people really didn't want to study death and end of life issues) or run over to the gym to the class I was actually enrolled in.<br />
<br />
I stayed. And so did 15 other people. It came down to putting names in a box and randomly selecting 3 people. Thank Jebus I was the first name drawn! I was so worried I skipped the first class of leisure and recreation for nothing.<br />
<br />
As far as my independent studies class goes, it is going to basically be artistic reproduction using new and emerging technologies. I will do 4 projects (from creating the artwork in physical or digital representation reproducing those works using various methods incorporating technology) and write a final paper. I'm super excited about this. This means I get school credit for stuff I would normally be doing 4 days a week anyway (with my school schedule, there's no real way I can go to the Gnomery on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday).<br />
<br />
I am also fairly stoked on my textiles class. Textiles? Yeah. After discussing with the department chair my ultimate goals, we came to the conclusion that textiles would be a great place to focus my energies. People are intimidated by fine art. If you aren't an artist, you aren't really going to feel comfortable painting a picture or drawing or sculpting. But people are far less intimidated by crafts. I'm learning hand sewing, crocheting, embroidery and the like. These are skills that are far less intimidating to most people.<br />
<br />

But I had a good reason. I had to go over to City Hall in San Leandro and get Mind-2-Matter's business license! I've been trying for a couple of weeks to get over there, but the planning department has wonky hours. They work a full day Monday and 8-12 Tuesday through Thursday and are closed on Fridays. Yesterday was a holiday (and last week I don't think I ended up in San Leandro during business hours), so I got it taken care of today.<br />
<br />
I did get some screen captures done of the set up for Matter Control today. I haven't had a chance to run anything yet (there are never enough printers because we're so busy!), but set up is super easy.<br />

I'll try to get my hands on a printer tomorrow to run a print job.<br />
<br />
Like I've said, I'm a total novice when it comes to printing. Justin has ALL the printing skillz because he's seriously spent like the entire last year with the printer. He knows the ins and outs better than anyone does of the Type A Machines Series 1. He also knows the hassles of other printer controllers.<br />
<br />
I'll play with it and ask his opinion on it as an "expert".<br />
<br />
BTW, added a few new pieces of art to our <a href="http://society6.com/LaserGnomes/Sewing-the-Seeds-of-Love_Print#1=45" target="_blank">Society6</a> page, including this awesomeness! I don't even like throw pillows, but I would order one.<br />

I was all super ready to do a run down of Matter Control today. Well, life happens and it was a beautiful day at the beach with my family.<br />
<br />
We go to Blind Beach as a family on Jan. 20th to remember my brother, Jesse, each year. It is a place filled with great family memories, I got married there and it's the beach from the end of the Goonies.<br />

It definitely does NOT feel like January. In the least. It was like 70 degrees and sunny with barely a breeze. You can't even get that weather in July around here (we had overcast and cool weather for our June wedding).<br />

<br />
I'll be home in the morning (it's about 12:30 a.m. and I'm at the Gnomery) so I will do the video walk through of MatterControl set up on Desky. I've got Screencast-O-Matic installed on Desky and makes recording video/audio a snap. It's also a bit better than just posting some pictures of screen shots.<br />
<br />
I have to say that I've done the set up, played around with it and Matter Control should be a breeze for novices. Considering we have only had one printer at home (well, there was a bit of time we had 2 printers at home) and it was being used for making $$$$, I never really got a chance to play around with some of the other controller software out there. I can tell you from watching Justin spend countless hours figuring it all out, none of them are as straight forward as Matter Control.<br />
<br />
Matter Control introduced me to the Airwolf line of printers. While we exclusively use Type A Machines Series 1 printers, I'm slightly obsessed with the Airwolf printer. Really only because it has such a badass name. I've had the Airwolf theme song stuck in my head since I saw the printer.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/nIoSPevvsds" width="420"></iframe>
<br />
I can't attest to how Airwolf printers work (though if the makers want us to test head to head on a commercial level versus the Type A Machines, we'll gladly test it for you!), and I know they currently come with a much larger diameter hot end (.5 is their standard with a .35 hot end available sometime in the spring), so it's comparing apples to oranges.<br />

This man was a senior athlete (competing in the Veteran's Games and winning in multiple categories at age 94) and had been diagnosed with cancer.<br />
<br />
I don't know why I was surprised by the number of people posting comments about him "giving up" or that he could have "beat cancer". At 95, cancer treatment can be more devastating than the cancer itself. We don't know anything other than his choice after being diagnosed with cancer and I'm saddened by people's judgement when it comes to death with dignity and issues surrounding death in our culture.<br />
<br />
Our society on the whole values quantity of life over quality of life. There are no questions about it. We as a whole are so uncomfortable with death and dying that we look at it as "giving up" or "taking the easy way out" or even "cowardly". We keep people hooked to machines to prolong lives for often times selfish reasons. We don't want to deal with the grief and feelings that accompany loss.<br />
<br />
Many people form these judgments having never experienced watching a loved one suffer. They have not witnessed the sadness and suffering that terminally and chronically ill people endure on a daily basis.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/0e/9c/09/0e9c09a76687205d27d1a0fdeb014f88.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/0e/9c/09/0e9c09a76687205d27d1a0fdeb014f88.jpg" height="640" width="454" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is a picture (probably my favorite ever) of my younger brother, Jesse. </div>
<br />
He made the choice at 29 to enter hospice care. He suffered tremendously for 15 years from gastroparesis and the side effects of his treatment over the years. He did not make the decision lightly. It was not rash.<br />
<br />
His choice was NOT "cowardly". His choice was NOT "giving up". He did NOT "take the easy way out". <br />
<br />
And our family did NOT try to talk him out of his choice for our own selfish reasons. It was terrifying for all of us to consider life without him, but we honored and respected his choice. We also had to fight to have others respect his choice.<br />
<br />
The first hospice organization that was treating him had a new medical director start the week after he had been admitted to hospice care. This man pulled the rug from under our feet by saying that Jesse was too young to make this decision and he was not going to help him commit suicide because our family doctor told him there were other options. He discharged my brother immediately from their care. When confronted about "other options", this man told me he couldn't discuss it with either my mother or myself. (Never mind the fact he would not tell Jesse either what these "other options" were.) We confronted our family doctor, who told us he did not do any such thing.<br />
<br />
I made a flurry of phone calls that day to try to find someone, anyone who could help us. Being in a rural community, the first organization was "the only game in town". I called countless organizations that day, but no one was able to help us. I called the last group in the Sacramento region that I could find. While they couldn't help us (we were out of their treatment area), the nurse asked if she could pass our information on to a new group, Bristol Hospice, to see if they could help us.<br />
<br />
Again, we were outside of their treatment area, but Bristol Hospice took over Jesse's care and helped make the last 6 months of Jesse's life the best he had experienced in years. He was comfortable. He was able to enjoy the time he had left. He got to see the San Francisco Giants win a World Series. He saw one last Winter Classic. One last Christmas with the family.<br />
<br />
Most importantly, he passed away peacefully at home surrounded by the people he loved.<br />
<br />
There is something to be said about quality over quantity of life. Having watched my brother (and best friend) suffer for so many years, not just physically but emotionally as well due to his illness, I respected his choice. Tomorrow it will be 3 years that he has been gone. I miss him every day, but take comfort knowing he is no longer suffering.<br />
<br />
The choice to die with dignity should be just that, a choice. A choice that is respected like any other. We spend so much time talking about not judging others, yet when the topic of dying with dignity comes up, everyone is quick to judge. We talk so much about respecting others, but when a person chooses to end life extending measures that respect seems to fly out the window.<br />
<br />
Life is something to be lived to the fullest and celebrated (not everyone gets the chance to have a grand party like <span style="background-color: white; font-family: Georgia, Times, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.464000701904297px;">Emiel). Each person has to make their own way in this world, let's keep the judgement to ourselves. </span><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

(LaserGnomes are on Society6)I've finally gotten around to putting my photography and art up on <a href="http://society6.com/LaserGnomes" target="_blank">Society6</a>. While I could technically take care of getting prints made, it's a lot easier to outsource it. I don't have to worry about making/obtaining the print, shipping, etc and Society6 can offer products that I can't such as iPhone cases, tote bags, throw pillows and the like.<br />

I haven't been to the Gnomery in 3 days! It's a bit weird, but I am working "out of the home" on some illustrations for an upcoming project.<br />
<br />
I used the <a href="http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/html/pbPage.PDPS/productID.286866600" target="_blank">Microsoft Surface Pro 2</a> yesterday to work on one of my pieces and it was AWESOME. It was like a mini Cintiq! We have the 256G model with 8GB of RAM. Um seriously, I was so jealous. It's a tablet that is better than both my lappy (6GB of RAM) or my desky (only a piddly 2GB of RAM)! The ElderGnome managed to get his hands on one and they have been out of stock FOREVER!<br />
<br />
We got it to use with the Sense 3D scanner (the Surface Pro 2 has USB onboard) but it's also AMAZING for PhotoShop and Illustrator. There's a bit of adjusting (I'm used to full keyboard and the Wacom Intuos 4) but I really loved the performance. The only problem I ran into was serious arm pain today. The screen isn't as large as my Intuos surface (or any of my sketchbooks), so I was using a lot more fine motor control, which causes my arm and hand pain to flare up.<br />
<br />
On the 3D printing front, Justin was insanely excited by the beta release of <a href="http://www.mattercontrol.com/" target="_blank">MatterControl</a>, a new printer controller. I haven't had a chance to see it in action but Justin was super excited when he called me from the shop about it. In reviewing the features, I can see why he's excited.<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>It's "plug & print", which he probably isn't super thrilled about but new users will be. </li>
<li>SMS and Email notification - That's a pretty big deal. Knowing a print is complete (or not), helps us plan our day a bit more accordingly. Say we go home for the night, it will be great to know if the print is actually done instead of going in and hanging out until it finishes (also great if you need to go out to lunch or run errands). </li>
<li>Drag and Drop queuing - Drag and drop always makes things flow a bit better. </li>
<li>Design Library - This is pretty sweet. It allows you to organize and store your print files. </li>
<li>Advanced Plating - This is pretty exciting. Automatically detect multiple parts within a single design file and then individually manipulate, scale, rotate, and mirror those parts.</li>
</ul>
<div>
Like I said, I haven't seen it in action yet, but it sounds pretty awesome. I think the feature that was most exciting (to Justin, Elijah and possibly Levi) was that you can name your printer(s). That might not seem like much, but when you have 5 printers running, names help instead of COM PORT numbers.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In fact, we're having a naming contest. Suggestions can be made on the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/LaserGnomes" target="_blank">LaserGnomes</a> Facebook page. </div>

<br />
This is how hard Pi works at The Gnomery!<br />
<br />
I've been trying with ZERO luck to upload <a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10202237918183107&comment_id=6505637&offset=0&total_comments=12&notif_t=video_comment">this video</a> of what happens at night in The Gnomery. Blogger is a jerk, so it won't embed no matter how I try to upload it, so a link will have to do.<br />
<br />
I haven't done a ton of creative work this week, but creative work has been going on in the Gnomery (part of the video above is "testing" the "<a href="https://www.facebook.com/LaserGnomes/app_251458316228">TactiGnome SlugFire"</a> - a LaserGnomes designed accessory for the NERF SledgeFire blaster).<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://dpbfm6h358sh7.cloudfront.net/images/2470014/149540522.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://dpbfm6h358sh7.cloudfront.net/images/2470014/149540522.jpg" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">TactiGnome SlugFire designed and manufactured by LaserGnomes</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
We're also getting ready to start testing some new materials. We typically print in PLA, but have some PET to test in the near future. Both are environmentally friendly bioplastics, which we use instead of petroleum based plastics like ABS.<br />
<br />
It's been a full week of research and paperwork for me, but Mind-2-Matter is almost done with all of that. We have moved to a fantastic space in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Leandro,_California">San Leandro, CA</a>. We're sharing this space with <a href="http://www.typeamachines.com/">Type A Machines</a> and it's going great.<br />
<br />
The City of San Leandro is committed to revitalizing and re-imagining American manufacturing and we are excited to be a part of it. San Leandro has a fiber loop (can't tell you how excited Justin was at the mention of this!), tons of warehouse and commercial space available (the building we are in was formerly a Ford, Chrysler and Caterpillar plant) and they are currently having a "<a href="http://www.sanleandro.org/news/displaynews.asp?NewsID=686&TargetID=1">holiday</a>" from business license fees to attract new businesses to the area. This applies to almost any new business setting up shop in San Leandro, which is unheard of.<br />
<br />
As a "start up" company, that is a great incentive. For us, a very small business (3 people currently), the savings don't seem like a ton (about $300), but considering business licence fees are calculated on the number of owners and employees, that can quickly add up. Can't beat free, right?!<br />
<br />
Keep an eye out for some of our upcoming projects. We are about ready to start casting in the new facility (we're up to 4 kilns) and we are expanding our 3D printing capabilities.<br />

<br /></div>
I totally thought I had more pictures on my phone/camera but I've been so excited to just make things and get set up, I have been slacking on the photos!<br />
<br />
I'll get some tomorrow of the nearly completed space.<br />
<br />
I do have pictures of some of my projects. I want to test out scanning equipment on sculpture, so I have been working with <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006JFUZXC/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B006JFUZXC&linkCode=as2&tag=therograb-20">Sculpture House Prima Plastilina Modeling Clay, Sulphur Free, Light Tan, 2 lb - 2 lb</a><img alt="" border="0" src="http://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=therograb-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B006JFUZXC" height="1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" />, which is an oil based clay that does not dry out. I've never worked with it before and was sort of worried about the "hardness" of it (I put off model making 1 forever and a day because of the thought of using it). When Justin used it for school, he was warming it in the oven to soften it and then you ran into the issue of it getting too hot and burning your hands.<br />
<br />
Well, I discovered the wonders of the heat gun. I've used the heat gun for finishing PLA and doing some welding/shaping work in PLA, so I grabbed it to use on the plastilina. It works wonders! How a heat gun is NOT a part of your materials list for classes that require it is mystery to me!<br />
<br />
I definitely needed a break from working with it today, as my hand and arm hurt a lot but <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005Y4CYC4/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B005Y4CYC4&linkCode=as2&tag=therograb-20">Wintergreen Essential Oil. 10 ml. 100% Pure, Undiluted, Therapeutic Grade.</a><img alt="" border="0" src="http://ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/ir?t=therograb-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B005Y4CYC4" height="1" style="border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;" width="1" /> has been a lifesaver when it comes to pain caused by over exertion. I have 20:80 dilution mixed up at all times (usually adding wintergreen oil to avocado oil or coconut oil as a carrier) and it works wonders. I even gave some to my mom for her horrible chronic foot pain and she said it helped really quickly.<br />

<br />
I had a couple of kids request a fairy sculpture when I went to the Creative Learning Loft Christmas party, but it's turning out to be a bit more elfin than fairy. I'm not one for fairy princesses anyway :)
<br />
<br />
All I can say is this is a really exciting time and I'm so proud of my husband for keeping at 3D printing even when it was frustrating beyond belief. We had an idea of where we wanted to land, but weren't sure how we were going to get there.<br />
<br />
We now have a wonderful creative space and are making money doing what we love. We can even take the Pi to work with us.<br />

<br />
<br />
We will be having an open house/shop warming party in the near future. Keep an eye out for the info!<br />
<br />
BTW - I haven't forgotten about the whole 3D modeling software trials. Between the move and holidays, it's been busy and in all honesty, it's faster for me to bust out the clay. I spent hours trying to figure out how to do fairy garden fence pieces using software and had doors in 3 sizes, a fence and part of an elfin creature done in an 8 hour day.Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07373009722025876189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2171424743422452867.post-2304082132806862942013-12-20T23:35:00.000-08:002013-12-20T23:35:29.481-08:00The Gnomery (Gnome Sweet Gnome)I haven't forgotten about my reviews of 3D modeling software. I really haven't.<br />
<br />
But it's been quite exciting around here nonetheless.<br />
<br />
The Gnomery is moving. We picked up keys and started moving furniture in today!<br />

I spent much of yesterday working with <a href="http://www.composimold.com/">ComposiMold</a>, which I had come across at MakerFaire earlier this year. It's a reusable molding compound for making a variety of molds (including 2 part, push molds and more). It comes in a variety of formulations, including FC, or food contact.<br />
<br />
I ordered my ComposiMold through Amazon and it arrived in 2 days as Prime Shipping usually does (I say usually because I had one item show up like 5 months later after a replacement had already been sent out).<br />
<br />
Unfortunately, the top of the container was contaminated with mold!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I was totally bummed and reached out to ComposiMold on Facebook. Granted it was like midnight when I posted the pictures, I didn't really expect anything to happen right away.<br />
<br />
Well, when I got up the next morning, I had two responses to my post and a separate email from ComposiMold. They apologized profusely and have issued a replacement AND refunding my original purchase price in order to make things right.<br />
<br />
Later in the day, I even received a voicemail from Sean at ComposiMold apologizing for the situation.<br />
<br />
Even though my initial experience was less than stellar, they have worked really hard to make it right. It is really rare to find good customer service (let alone any customer service) these days, it was awesome to have a company be so responsive to a problem.<br />
<br />
I can't post any pictures of the project since it's Christmas and all (don't want to give away the goods!). I'll post pictures once I've given the gifts.<br />
<br />
We picked up some furniture from Moving Sale (our local second hand shop), including a super sweet whiteboard set up! Unfortunately, it was about 5 pm when Rod got into town with the kiln hoods so traffic was horrendous getting out of the city. I think it took more than an hour to get there (The ride home took less than 20 minutes without traffic).<br />

I can't tell you how exciting this is. A year ago, we were getting our 3D printer. We had a dream to put it to work for us. We didn't know how we were going to do it, but that was the plan. We've had our ups and downs with the printer itself. In fact, take a look at my first post, <a href="http://roguerabbitheart.blogspot.com/2013/01/type-machines-series-1.html">Type A Machines Series 1</a>, it was quite the learning experience.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">A photo from my first blog post about 3D printing. Our failed print graveyard. It got larger, much larger over the last year. </td></tr>

<br />
Today we are setting up our future. We had an idea and we've stuck it out. We have gone from the above results to print on demand fulfillment, including 3D scanning and metal casting. Some didn't have faith in our dream but we did and now it is paying off. My husband's perseverance through this project has been nothing short of amaze (and yes, I meant to type amaze).<br />
<br />
Sometimes it has been nerve wracking. My poor husband stays up all night working. I have felt tremendous guilt for being busy with an outside job and school, but we've pressed on. Big things are happening and I'm filled with gratitude to be a part of it.<br />

<br />
We went to check out the new facility in San Leandro today, which is BEYOND exciting!<br />
<br />
I'm trying to figure out school for next semester, which is sort of frustrating. SFSU still hasn't requested transcripts, so I'm not entirely certain what is transferrable from AAU. I know what transferred from Los Rios Community College, so that helps a bit, but some of the core classes I have no idea if I actually need to take them or not. <span id="goog_1844684250"></span><br />
<br />
I'm going to go down to campus tomorrow to pay tuition and see if I can get together with an adviser or at least someone in admissions/records to help me out. I have a rough plan, but I'd rather have it taken care of so it's one less thing to worry about.<br />
<br />
With checking out our new space today, it's really coming at us fast. It's exciting and scary at the same time.<br />
<br />
I have orientation for school on Saturday, but I would like to have an idea of what my schedule will be like so I can figure out where/when I can be of use when we start kicking into gear. I'm a planner a lot of the time. I like to have an idea what is going on.<br />
<br />
I usually have classes registered for the second they are available, but my lack of readily available immunization records prevented that. I'm 34. It's not easy finding records from shots I got when I was like 7. My pediatrician went out of business ages ago.<br />
<br />
Instead, I had to pay $100 to have a blood test performed to prove I had my MMR vaccine like 27 years ago. That meant I risked having the results come back showing that I have no immunity. Which would have meant get the immunization (again, pricey on top of the test I just paid for) or find a doctor that would write me an exemption.<br />
<br />
Thank Jeebus it came back that I have immunity. One less worry (I was concerned about finding a doc that would give me an exemption!). I have the Hep series from when I was a firefighter and I did get a TDAP in 2009.<br />
<br />
I'm still working on the 3d modeling software trials.<br />
<br />
It's FRUSTRATING! Good god, I don't know how Justin made into 3d modeling! All I can think of every time I start up the program is "holy crap, I could grab a block of clay and have this done in 10 minutes and then scan it!"<br />
<br />
That was what I did for the Rufio costume and it worked out well. But I'm super determined to learn how to model. Especially when I see the possibilities for what I want to do design-wise.<br />
<br />
I've got finals tomorrow and Tuesday. I've got Orientation on Saturday. Le Midge's birthday is next Tuesday. Christmas is next Wednesday.<br />
<br />
We've got people asking about our New Years plans. We have barely even thought about Christmas, aside from sweet, delicious tri tip at my mom's.Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07373009722025876189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2171424743422452867.post-50251597213176547402013-12-12T21:25:00.000-08:002013-12-13T00:01:51.187-08:003D Sculpting Software - Curvy 3D - Day 2I'm still playing around with <a href="http://www.curvy3d.com/">Curvy3D</a>. I am going to work with Justin to try to come up with good evaluation tools from his standpoint (i.e., how the models will work for printing, etc.) to try to evaluate if the program works for our overarching needs, not just my desire to make organic shapes (really, what good is the model going to be if it doesn't print?!).<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The other project I was working on was the Rufio costume for a friend. A friend approached me yesterday afternoon with the need for a Rufio costume for a party that started at 4 pm today! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Not sure who Rufio is? A character from 1991's Hook. A bit random, right? Especially for a Christmas party. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I altered the jacket and made the necklace, including the beads. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Not bad for such a quick turnaround. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So with that taking up a bit of time (but amazingly not as much as I expected), I played around with Curvy3D. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Keep in mind, my area of design is 2D. I'm great with Illustrator, Photoshop, etc. I have the hang of TinkerCAD as far as 3D goes, but I am, by no means experienced in 3D modeling. I have played a bit with Inventor (Autodesk) and AutoCAD (Autodesk). </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I really want a program that I can pick up my stylus and "draw". I played a bit with Sculptris but didn't really "get it" super quick (I will return to it after playing with Curvy3D). </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here's my first attempt at really playing around with it doing more than just "what does this icon do?"</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So this was created using some basic tools including "Create Cylinder", "Pull Tubes", "Add", "Sub" and "Smooth". </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I didn't really have a plan and wasn't entirely certain what I was doing, I sort of started "pushing" and "pulling" the clay and playing around with it. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I've exported it as an .obj file so Justin can evaluate it's usefulness in 3D printing. He's currently working on a 3D printed trailer for a trailer park (the things people want), so I'll probably have a better idea as to the immediate usability of the model tomorrow. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
On an aside, I'm not exactly sure when my entire Pinterest feed began getting flooded with fashion and mens grooming products (pretty sure the grooming products being as hipstery as they are are courtesy of Shoppe Mob). I've got to start following some better boards. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Any suggestions?</div>

<br /></div>
<div>
Everyone knows how much I love TinkerCAD but for a lot of what I want to do, it can't create organic shapes. You can only do so much creating .svgs in Illustrator and importing into TinkerCAD. I can't chamfer or bevel, I can't create fillets. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I can use Autodesk's Inventor or AutoCAD but I really want to work organically. My other thought was to sculpt everything by hand and use the Sense 3D scanner to create models, but really, I should learn how to model digitally. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I don't have the education that Justin has (and that is why he has an INTENSE understanding of models) and don't necessarily need to. But I need to be able to create organic designs digitally. I need to be able to do more than extrude an .svg file and print that (really, I could just be using a laser cutter, which is much faster and I could work in a variety of materials for that). </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
To truly take advantage of what we are building, I need to model. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm trying a bunch of programs out, either freeware or on trial basis, in the next few weeks to see how I feel about them and try to judge their ease of use. I want to find a program that a novice could play around with and not be frustrated. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Enter <a href="http://www.curvy3d.com/">Curvy3D</a>. I'm going to play with it for at least a week. I started playing around with it today, but got a request to help make a Rufio costume by tomorrow. So I took the opportunity to carve some dragon's teeth for a necklace, make a mold and create custom beads for it. We also do some low tech manufacturing here was well. It's not always lasers and PLA :)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I didn't really get far enough into Curvy3D start getting into the nitty gritty, but it allows me to start doing what I had planned for in my designs. There is a 30 day free trial (that's how I'm checking it out) and the normal cost is $99.00. It is currently discounted 25% for a sale price of $74.25. That's not bad considering the intense investment most other software entails. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I plan do to some screen captures and possibly some videos while I'm playing around with it, which I will share here. Some others I am checking out will be Wings3D, Sculptris and Modo. 123D Sculpt (autodesk product) is, unfortunately, iPad only. So that's not going to be in the running.</div>

<br />
It was hosted by Type A Machines and 3DHubs, who just recently unlocked San Francisco.<br />
<br />
3DHubs is another print on demand service that required a certain number of printers to sign up in an area prior to "unlocking" a city. We had been watching for months for San Francisco to be unlocked but have been steadily using MakeXYZ to grow our business.<br />
<br />
We spent a bit of time networking and one of the featured speakers was <a href="http://www.madeinspace.us/">Made in Space</a>!<br />
<br />
What's Made in Space you ask?<br />
<br />
Basically they are a group that is working on the first 3D printer in space!<br />
<br />
How rad is that idea?<br />
<br />
I can't say we're working on anything as ground (or space) breaking as 3D printing in space, but Mind-2-Matter getting to be a REALLY exciting project.<br />
<br />
I'm working on the photography tomorrow morning before we head out to Half Moon Bay.<br />
<br />
I went through the entire casting process on Saturday from spruing to pouring the investment mold to pouring the pewter! Justin took some video so I will get that posted up tomorrow as well as the photos of Gnorman in various states of being.<br />
<br />
Here are a few of Gnorman from my cell phone (the real pictures will happen tomorrow!).<br />

<br />
I have been working diligently on projects, especially now that I have a lot more time on my hands. I haven't really settled into a routine since losing my job. I really think that will help. We're going crabbing tomorrow (hopefully a crabfest will be had tomorrow night!) but I would really like to get a good routine down.<br />
<br />
In fact, I just finished this piece today:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7jZAVAEJt8KHl198E9rAEbIGoWCz48Oxe8OKbxNmUDEJgCi0SO6y6fPMlM3ZRbEBmgriQGO4lX3jl8neN4nEqfdcGsghGjztmUg7gE95ce2FLN8IY0_JgNZlGz595z9g9gKFgTjZ_8HmL/s1600/DSC08606.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7jZAVAEJt8KHl198E9rAEbIGoWCz48Oxe8OKbxNmUDEJgCi0SO6y6fPMlM3ZRbEBmgriQGO4lX3jl8neN4nEqfdcGsghGjztmUg7gE95ce2FLN8IY0_JgNZlGz595z9g9gKFgTjZ_8HmL/s1600/DSC08606.JPG" height="320" width="314" /></a></div>
<br />
It's available in our <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/171852210/the-studious-stag-limited-edition-mixed?">Etsy store</a> and it's a part of a series of 5 pieces I'm working on.<br />
<br />
In all honesty, the general crappiness of the eCraft has been the hold up on this and several other projects.<br />
<br />
Contacting Craftwell has been of little help other than "you're doing it wrong". I finally found a blogger at <a href="http://purplepaperparadise.blogspot.com/">Purple Paper Paradise</a> who apparently knows how to use the machine and is WAY more help than Craftwell's customer service.<br />
<br />
I was able to get a few usable cuts following her tips, whereas I was still just throwing paper away trying to "do it right" according to Craftwell Customer Service.<br />
<br />
Perhaps they need to sit down and watch PurplePaperParadise's videos in order to work in CS? I don't like to be mean to CS people, they're usually doing the best they can with the limited resources and training that they get. I'm more frustrated with companies that offer products with little to no support documentation and you just sort of have to figure out, especially when they purport their product to be easy to use out of the box.<br />
<br />
I've got some additional projects on my list, including Christmas cards. I know it's a bit late (a lot of people do their Christmas cards Thanksgiving weekend), but I seriously didn't even think about them until I asked my husband yesterday if he wanted to send any out and if we were going to make them or do a lame photo card.<br />
<br />
I hope to have cards ready by the weekend. You can always leave a comment here if you have suggestions. I'm really interested to hear if there are letter press plates that people really want to see made for units like the Fiskar's Fuse or the like. I've got the capacity to help make that a reality and have had it on my radar for a while now. I've asked friends and family if there were any sort of crafting themes they would like to see but none of them want to craft (everyone is into Instagram to apply filters to their photos but no one actually does anything with said photos).Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07373009722025876189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2171424743422452867.post-6864760043977948292013-11-23T23:34:00.000-08:002013-11-23T23:34:00.038-08:00Mind-2-Matter<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
You may remember Gnorman from earlier this year.<br />
<br />
This was my free sculpture for my figure modeling class during the Spring 2013 semester at AAU.<br />
<br />
This may be the piece of work that I am the most proud of ever. EVER. (and I've made a lot of art in the last 30 years). Needless to say I was most saddened when I was too busy to properly finish Gnorman and have him fired (I went straight from work/school to wedding prep/work and he dried out!).<br />
<br />
I had been crossing my fingers that we could get him scanned before he was a total loss since June/July. Our method of scanning wasn't the easiest but Justin and I worked through a variety of methods using Kinect cameras for another project and I figured that we would, at some point, rig that set up again.<br />
<br />
Well, we didn't have to.<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/yeVaciIxuuY" width="560"></iframe>
<br />
The Gnomes (thanks to the Elder Gnome) have acquired the Sense 3D Scanner.<br />
<br />
A few minutes time and we had a model to print. I was so excited I could barely contain myself last night! The original Gnorman is 8" W x 13" D x 24" H. New Gnorman is about 1" W x 1.5" D x 4" H!<br />

<br />
I started working on my to do list for projects tonight when I got home. It's long. But I'm totally stoked.<br />
<br />
I took a drive to the coast today while Justin was working. Pi and I drove through Sebastapol. I had hoped to get apples so I could test my pie crust as an apple pie. While they grow apples in Sebastapol, it's not quite Apple Hill. There aren't a ton of farm stands. There isn't a lot of variety. I stopped at one place and they only had one variety of apples. ONE!<br />
<br />
We continued on and went to Duncan Mills to get coffee and over to Blind Beach. I was happy to see that the "pews" from our wedding were still sort of there!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The last row of our "pews" was still in place. One "pew" has been partially buried. </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I wasn't going to to today, but Justin really encouraged me to do it. And it was awesome. The weather was great. Pi and I walked on the beach and just sat for a while. It gave me some time to disconnect (no phones/internet/etc) out there and to actually talk with people as Pi played with their dogs.<br />

I have a billiondy ideas going through my head right now and started a new to do list. (each component of my to do list has to do lists, but hey, I don't want to lose the good ideas!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm pretty stoked about Thanksgiving. We're getting together with Justin's family the weekend before and my family on thanksgiving. I'm in charge of pie and biscuits. I'm making my super delicious pumpkin pie and sweet potato biscuits. It's kind of cool that my family is trying new things for Thanksgiving this year (it's a gluten free Thanksgiving for the most part). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One thing I'm going to test this week for sure is trying a real food version of my mom's cranberry salad. The version we've been making forever uses Jell-O but in an attempt to ditch the artificial colors and flavors, I'm going to rework it with raspberry juice and gelatin. I'm really excited because it is one of the best parts of the holidays that we started making the year we had an "Amish" Thanksgiving with the Gauthier family when I was a kid. </div>

<br /></div>
<div>
Which got me totally distracted and I did not do any art tonight. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I posted wedding photos on Facebook. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
and did some yoga. Did I mention how much I like yogaglo?! You can search by body part! They have a bunch of practices for psoas and IT work. Which I need. Immensely. A lot of people need to release their psoas and IT band and don't even realize it. A lot of times it manifests as low back or knee pain. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I did a moon cycle practice and open shoulders. And during my yoga, I noticed the Ratinator did work. It's been a while since we had seen any evidence of mice or caught one. So obviously they are not totally gone. </div>
<div>

<div>
I think of all of the wedding pictures, this may be my favorite. Jesse isn't there in the physical sense, but it's like he's there. </div>

<br />
Tonight felt like a bit more of a thinking kind of night.<br />
<br />
I did some yoga (breath work only - though I may have gotten a bit too relaxed. I think I fell asleep at the end). I'm checking out Yogaglo.com right now. I like the organization of their classes better than myyogaworks.com (you can browse by teacher, duration, style, and level and they also have some lectures as well). It even allows you to set goals to meet (# of classes or # of hours per week) and tracks them. You can even create a queue and schedule what day you want to take a class.<br />
<br />
In addition to what I've already listed, they even have classes modified to accommodate your cycle (you are never supposed to do inversions during your period). I don't know if most ladies take that into consideration or if they are just trying to get yoga butt.<br />
<br />
Speaking of yoga butt, I didn't even know that was a thing when I started doing yoga. My yoga experience has always involved old hippies. There were never super skinny Lululemon clad ladies practicing yoga, but here in SF they appear to be the only people who practice yoga.<br />
<br />
Justin and I discussed the possibility of me taking antihistamines in addition to strict diet to get things under control (and allow me to eat MOAR DIFFERENT foods). This conversation was held over a bowl of Pho. I had asked for no jalapenos but alas there were jalapenos in it. So far, so good. No reaction to the Pho or jalapenos. This could be huge because I could totally start eating fermented hot sauce again. It's delicious and I have missed it terribly!<br />
<br />
Obviously I don't want to take benedryl every day again (I did that for years and still was a mess), so I started looking into natural antihistamines. I stumbled across the blend of Lavendar, Lemon and Peppermint, which is supposed to be a natural antihistamine/anti-inflammatory blend.<br />
<br />
Well, I don't have any gel caps currently, so I whipped up the LLP blend in a base of coconut oil. Topically, it is applied to the soles of the feet 2x a day. Even if this does nothing for my allergies, I will have soft, nice smelling feet!<br />
<br />
I may try doing the the LLP blend internally using the gelatin capsules, but for now I am going to do the topical application.<br />
<br />
I also started doing some rough sketches for another idea I have to add to my skull series.Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07373009722025876189noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2171424743422452867.post-45116223877045702812013-11-11T22:33:00.000-08:002013-11-11T22:33:12.210-08:00 try to do it silently and sans heels<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I've still got some tweaking to do but this is promising :)<br />
<br />
Instead of a tangle or working with M0rt, I decided to do some organizing. I went through stacks of paper and have organized them by color and print. Previously, I'd peruse a stack and have to pull pages out to see how I was going to combine them. Well, not any more (well, not entirely. There are still a few more that need to be organized but my wrist was starting to hurt).<br />
<br />
Speaking of, I had a wicked case of the dropsies today and it freaked me out somewhat. Hopefully it's just a one off kind of day.<br />
<br />
I finally remembered what I wanted to talk about yesterday:Shoes. And screaming. We watched <i>Olympus Has Fallen</i> (which was really not as bad as I had expected) and there were so many ladies screaming. And having to run barefoot through shards of glass and smoldering debris because they had to ditch their high heels because they couldn't run/escape in them.<br />
<br />
My first thought was (not that I can say how I would act in some sort of shooting/bombing situation - though I can handle my shit in other emergency type situations) "why are you screaming? You are totally going to draw attention to your self." The logical part of me thinks "be quiet. they will aim indiscriminately in your direction if you are making noise."<br />
<br />
But then I wonder how I would react to someone shooting at me. I know how I reacted when someone was shooting at someone outside in my neighborhood. I stayed down and didn't move. I didn't scream or start flailing about (or run out into the street from the house to see what was going on like some silly people). Hell, I didn't want to move or make a sound. And I don't think I did until a few hours later. (The one shooting I went to as an emergency responder doesn't count. As much as the "victim" wanted us to believe the shooter was on the loose, it was pretty obviously his lady who was the shooter - nearly taking off his junk.)<br />
<br />
As far as the shoe things goes, I think I will be able to flee should I need to. I dropped flip flops (terrible shoes for trying to flee) a while ago (and wouldn't you know, my shins and calves are not all tight any more). I ditched high heels years ago (I still keep a pair for special occasions but in a city where you walk everywhere, I usually end up in flats). I've even ditched rigid soled flats for the most part (you need to get some Merrill Barefoot's. Need them - after the initial break in period which was hell).<br />
<br />
My shoes these days are minimal, functional and I could escape almost silently (I've sneaked up on more than a few people while wearing moccasins). That's not to say that some how my overall clumsiness wouldn't give my position away. I'm just covered in the shoe department.<br />
<br />
So I guess what I'm trying to say is always be prepared. If real life is anything like the movies, you may need to flee at any time. But try to do it silently and sans heels.<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
I did not get around to making my videos this weekend illustrating the issues with M0rt1m3r.<br />
<br />
I spent some time in my garden. I made real cupcakes for my husband. I made a spice cake for myself (with eggs and that was NOT the best idea).<br />
<br />
I broke down and bought LED light bulbs for the kitchen ceiling fan (and of course, the hardware store had 2 standard and 2 candelabra bulbs on the same rack - Get home and only 2 will work for our fixture. BLAH). I have to say even having just the 2 is great (though we have only had 1 of 4 bulbs working for lord knows how long).<br />
<br />
Put up some shelves yesterday:<br />

<br />
I threw in some silver AND gold tonight.<br />
<br />
I can't say I'm thrilled with the time change though. I don't like walking home in the dark. Or walking the dog in the dark when I get home. Point being, I like it when it's light out. The early darkness makes me feel like I should be in bed.<br />
<br />
Made the awesome Puerto Rican Pulled Pork recipe that I found in a Costco Magazine of all places (I totally put it in my llama recipe journal). Speaking of Costco, I picked up meat there last week and have been good to go all week! Yay me. I made a pork roast last Saturday and another today. Did some meals with ground beef (burgers and sauteed veggies with an avocado are my quick go to meal on school nights).<br />
<br />
I accidentally over cooked my cauliflower yesterday (it was pretty brown, not quite blackened though) and it was delicious!<br />
<br />
I'm settling into a better routine when it comes to cooking and working and making art. While I didn't keep doing a tangle EVERY day after the initial 36 days, I come home and work on SOMETHING just about every day. And I don't beat myself up if I want to go to bed early or read a book.<br />
<br />
So I finally heard back from Craftwell yesterday and the conclusion they came up with is "you have your pressure settings too high" so it's your fault your paper is snagging. My pressure was set at 4. My paper was a very heavyweight card stock. I've tried going lower than 4 and it barely even presses in to the paper and does not cut. So it looks like I will be preparing more videos outlining the outcome of EVERY pressure setting, starting at 1.<br />
<br />
It's pretty weak when a company makes excuses for their product. The eCraft should be able to cut 40 circles on a single page. It should also have some sort of speed control, be it on the machine itself or a speed control in the software. Everything shouldn't be blamed on the user. I have photos of paper snagging back when I first got it and it was doing it even when I was attempting to cut 5*7 rounded rectangles (I definitely would NOT call that a complex cut!).<br />
